Oracle /Hyperion = Essbase, OBIEE, Brio ??????

For many non- IT people “Hyperion” is a novel written by American writer Dan Simmons. It’s a science fiction novel, if you get chance read it. But, many non-hyperion people with IT background have a misconception that Hyperion is a tool and it is developed by oracle. People who have read my first blog would know the history of Hyperion. And in my blog I just want to write ONLY about Essbase (a product of Hyperion, now it is of Oracle). But, in this blog post I’m going to write about Hyperion products after Oracle acquisition.
In 2007, soon after the acquisition Oracle Corporation had bundled Hyperion BI tools into Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition Plus. This integrated suite included all of the Oracle and Hyperion reporting and analysis tools. Later in 2008, all Hyperion products came under one umbrella “Oracle Enterprise Performance Management and Business Intelligence”. ESSBASE is one of the Oracle Business Intelligence tool, like OBIEE etc. Hyperion Financial Management (HFM), Hyperion Planning are Oracle performance management tools.

About Hyperion

First things first. Before knowing about the Hyperion Essbase lets know its history. "Hyperion" is a company founded by Robert Thomson in 1981. Thomson, a native of Scotland, had worked for Citicorp in London before coming to the U.S. Thomson realized that if he could develop a software product that would make it possible for a number of users to access financial data via their personal computers rather than a mainframe, companies would pay to access this type of technology.
Over the years, Hyperion has built a number of product and service lines, among which are Hyperion Enterprise, Hyperion Pillar, and Hyperion OLAP. Hyperion Enterprise is an application for consolidating business information and reports, bringing together numerous ledgers into a single unified whole. Development began in mid-1988, and the product debuted in July 1991. In the three years leading up to 1997, when Hyperion released its fifth edition of Hyperion Enterprise, the product accounted for some 60 percent of the company's worldwide revenues.
In 1998, Hyperion Software merged with Arbor Software Corporation, which developed and marketed Essbase OLAP server. Essbase, whose name derives from "Extended Spread Sheet dataBASE. The merge was called the "combination of the leading OLAP technology company with the leading OLAP applications company." The combined company adopted the name Hyperion Solutions Corporation.

Later in 2002 - Hyperion launched the Business Performance Management softwares.  Today in the market there are many  Business Intellegence Applications that delivers a full range of analytic and reporting capabilities. Hyperion renamed many of its products in 2005, giving Essbase an official name of Hyperion System 9 BI+ Analytic Services. Oracle Corporation acquired Hyperion Solutions Corporation in 2007, as of 2009 it markets Essbase as "Oracle Essbase."

Recent Hyperion Essbase release history is as follows:

Version 9.0 - Sep 2005 (Hypeiron System 9 BI+)

Version 9.0.1 - Dec 2005

Version 9.2 - Jun 2006

Version 9.3 - Jan 2007

Version 9.3.1 - Nov 2007

Version 11.1.1.1 - Sep 2008

Version 11.1.1.2 - Mar 2009

Version 11.1.1.3 - Aug 2009 (Essbase Crystal Ball integration, Smartview Metadata, HVE Maps)

With the release of System 9, Hyperion provided a new user interface add-in for Essbase called "SmartView for Microsoft Office". SmartView provides access to Essbase and other System 9 content for Microsoft Powerpoint, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook as well as supplanting the previous add-in for Microsoft Excel.

So, guys that was a brief history about ESSBASE......keeping checking my blogs for more information.
